The face behind the product

OLAF RECHT

Surrounded by the Senningerberg forest, Olaf Recht’s studio is a minimally decorated, light-filled room on the ground floor of his house. It is here that he designs his products, on a work surface where the parts of the clock designed for Esch2022 are still piled up in an orderly fashion.

As a teenager, Olaf Recht was one of the first to join the newly launched design section at the Lycée de Garçons de Luxembourg. He found his calling there and continued his studies at the Art Center College of Design in Switzerland before transferring to the American branch of the college in Los Angeles. It was in the United States that the Luxembourg designer began his career, initially in prestigious agencies for which he designed printers, refrigerators, and children’s toys. After a brief return to Europe, Olaf Recht returned to Los Angeles for a few more years, this time working in medical design. It was a life-changing experience, he says, because his work has helped change the lives of people who are ill.

Since his return to the Grand Duchy, Olaf Recht has designed his own range of lamps and custom-made furniture, notably for Boconcept, and is involved in interior design projects for museums, restaurants, and public and private living spaces.

The product and its values

THE CLOCK ESCH2022

Olaf Recht is one of the two winners of the call for projects launched in the framework of Esch2022 – European Capital of Culture and intended to give a second life to the parquet floor of the Esch-sur-Alzette assembly hall.

The designer is keen to work with the raw material without processing it too much and to preserve all the authenticity of each slat of wood – scratches, stains, imperfections, colour variations and even original nails included – and has transformed these century-old boards into clocks with their own special character. Stamped with the slogan “Time leaves traces”, these symbols of the passing of time are unique handmade pieces, but also and above all true works of art.
