You’d be forgiven for thinking that Alain Welter was born with a spray can in his hand . Having started graffiti art at the age of 16, he’s kept at it ever since! The artist made a name for himself in Luxembourg early on with his “Make Koler Kooler” project, which involved painting murals on around 15 façades in his hometown of Kahler, which is nestled in the fields in the west of the country. The design started out as a simple end-of-studies project, but thanks to his inspiration and imagination, the murals have been a huge success and the village is now renowned as an authentic open-air museum dedicated to urban art. Alain finds his inspiration everywhere. From nature and the animals he loves to depict, songs or comic strips, Renaissance paintings or the dynamics of architecture. But it’s not about depicting just anything anywhere. A kindergarten isn’t a skate park, a bus, or a factory tower. Murals are also part of an architectural or natural context – the sky, another wall, a church, and so on – and this must be taken into account when choosing colours because everything must interact harmoniously.
